About Class I

Class 1 is where formal schooling begins, and NCERT keeps it gentle: short chapters, big pictures, and everyday language built around play-based learning. The focus at this stage is pre-literacy and pre-numeracy — recognising letters and sounds, counting objects, naming the world around you, and building the habit of sitting with a book. Parents reading alongside children will find the chapters short enough for a single sitting, and re-reading the same lesson several times is not only normal but recommended at this age.

Study tips

  • Read every lesson aloud together — hearing the words matters more than memorising them.
  • Point at pictures and name things before reading the text on the page.
  • Keep sessions to 15–20 minutes; little and often beats long sittings.
